Wer ein wenig Zeit mit dem 22-jährigen Songwriter Ewan Mainwood verbringt, merkt schnell, dass es bei seiner Musik vor allem um Gefühle geht. Seine Songs sprühen nur so vor Emotionen, was sowohl eine innige Verbindung zu den Zuhörern als auch eine kathartische Befreiung seiner eigenen Verwundbarkeiten hervorruft.
Diese Qualität ist in seiner Debütsingle „No One Saving Me“ sofort erkennbar. Da ist eine Reinheit in seiner Stimme, die die zu Herzen gehende Geschichte einer Beziehung, die unter dem Druck psychischer Probleme zerbricht, noch verstärkt. Aber Ewan Mainwoods Gesang besitzt zugleich echte Haltung: Von den fein artikulierten Strophen bis zur aufsteigenden Hookline ist das ein Talent, das die zeitlose Struktur seiner Songs mit einer großen Portion fesselndem Pop-Appeal erfüllt.
Seine Fähigkeit, persönliche Probleme in Songs zu verarbeiten, mit denen die Hörer sich sofort identifizieren können, prägt Ewan Mainwoods heute erschienen Debüt-EP „Broken“ , die Kollaborationen mit Künstlern wie Jake Gosling, Rationale und seinem alten Freund RISC enthält. Während seine erste große Trennung das dominierende Thema der EP ist, strotzt ihr letzter Song „Do You Ever Think About Me?“ vor Optimismus. Ewan Mainwood stellt sich in dem Song eine lebensbejahende zukünftige Romanze vor. „Das ist etwas, das mich schon immer fasziniert hat – hast du jemals zuvor den Weg dieser Person gekreuzt? Und du kannst nicht bloß Songs darüber schreiben, traurig zu sein, weil du nicht die ganze Zeit traurig bist.“
Ewan Mainwoods Fähigkeit, eindrucksvolle Schnappschüsse flüchtiger Momente im Leben festzuhalten, ist zum Teil von den Geschichtenerzählern inspiriert, die er bewundert: Sam Fender, Holly Humberstone und Frank Ocean. Außerdem ist da der unterschwellige Einfluss der Musik, die seine Eltern hörten, als er aufwuchs: die klassische Songwriting-Kunst von The Beatles, Oasis und The Smiths. Später wurde Ewan Mainwood ein glühender Fan von Ed Sheeran. Er verschlang jedes Interview, das er finden konnte, und experimentierte sogar mit seinem eigenen Loop-Pedal. Jahre später schloss sich dieser Kreis, als Ewan Mainwood von Grumpy Old Management unter Vertrag genommen wurde – was ihn zum Newcomer in einer kreativen Gemeinschaft machte, zu der Ed, Maisie Peters und Griff gehören. „Es ist großartig, von ihren Erfahrungen zu hören und davon, wie es ist, auf ihrem Niveau zu sein. Es fühlt sich wie eine Familie an, um ehrlich zu sein.“

JEREMY ZUCKER, CHELSEA CUTLER – you were good to me
This was a song that was released and I discovered during my time at University. It was one of those songs that me and a few of my friends became obsessed with and almost single handedly guided us through our relationship break ups at the time. It’s a fairly simple song but it just has this nostalgic feeling to it, kind of like I’d heard before even though I hadn’t. I love the piano part and the simple but effective melodies throughout the song. It’s one of those songs that I never tire of listening too and every time it comes on it takes me back to that sad but also hopeful time in my life.
THE BEATLES – WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS
I’ve always been a massive fan of The Beatles ever since I can remember but it wasn’t until more recently that I realised how gifted of a songwriter George Harrison was. In fact both of The Beatles songs I’ve included on this list are both written by him. There is something about this song that just fills me with emotion. I love the contrast of the darker sounding verses into the lift that comes in with the chorus melody lines. I also love the lyrical concept of the song as well as the beautiful guitar solo.
ED SHEERAN – SUPERMARKET FLOWERS
This is a song that has a lot personal meaning to me as it probably does for so many people around the world. I could’ve picked so many different Ed Sheeran songs but this one really helped me get through feeling grief for the first time. I love how it can be so personal to his situation but also be so relatable to myself and so many others. I just think it is a beautiful song and I found a lot of comfort in it and probably will do again in the future.
FRANK OCEAN – WHITE FERRARI
This is definitely my favourite Frank Ocean song. It just has this feeling to it which feels so nostalgic and melancholy. The synth sounds, vocals and just general production are incredible and always hit me in the feels. I think my favourite part of the song is the final section, I mean the song is already amazing before this bit but it comes out of blue and incredibly sums up the general feeling of the song through the warm delicate falsetto melodies and intricate lyrical concepts.
JOHN DENVER – ANNIE’S SONG
I love this song so much, I think its one of the best love songs ever written. I love the melody and the beautiful metaphors in the lyrics. Also when I found out that it was written after John Denver had a major fight with his partner and then wrote this song as an apology it just made me believe and relate to what he was singing even more. It’s one of those songs that’s not trying to be a great song it just comes from a place of such emotion that it makes the melody lines and lyrics even more special.
KANYE WEST – POWER
The energy of this track is unmatched by any other in my opinion. The way the vocal sample comes in with such aggression and power it always just makes me want to move. I think Kanye is a genius of sampling as he can take an initial idea and completely change the feeling and context it’s in. I also love how song constantly evolves while still using the initial sample melody, it’s just a masterpiece start to finish.
DON MCLEAN – VINCENT
This was actually a song I didn’t discover until more recently but I think it is incredible. I’ve always been intrigued by the story of Vincent Van Gogh and can’t believe I didn’t discover this song which portrays the emotion of the story so well. I love the guitar riff which almost follows the melody line of the vocal as well as the beautiful metaphors that are used to describe the incredibly sad story of Van Gogh.
